The London 2012 Olympic Flame will travel through Mitcham Town Centre, Colliers Wood and Wimbledon as part of the south London Relay on Monday 23 July 2012.
The route of the Torch was announced today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), with the Flame to be carried by selected Torchbearers also named today.
Residents, schools and local business are encouraged to line the streets of the borough. There will be four party areas and performance spaces.
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: “We are proud to be a host borough for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“This is a unique opportunity for residents, schools and local businesses to witness the Olympic Torch. I encourage all those who live and work in Merton to take part in this historic event.”
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG added:
“Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to out streets.
“Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Merton’s moment to shine.”
