Mitcham Carnival 2012 will be a major part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
To tie in with the Jubilee festivities Mitcham Carnival will be earlier this year, on Saturday 2 June.
Anyone wishing to have a stall at the carnival, or enter a float in the parade, should visit http://www.merton.gov.uk/mitchamcarnival or call 020 8545 4704.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Elizabeth to Elizabeth’, marking the visits to Mitcham by Queen Elizabeth I on several occasions between 1591 and 1595, and the visit to Mitcham by Queen Elizabeth II in May of this year.
A parade, led by the Mayor of Merton will set off from Figges Marsh at 12.30pm and complete its journey at Three Kings Piece at 1pm.
Some of the attractions this year include a jousting stunt team called ‘Knights of the Damned’, a family fun fair, a mascot race-off and music by Fanny and the Electric Band. There will also be a wide variety of charity and trade stalls.
Merton Council’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said ‘This year’s Mitcham Carnival is extra special as we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. I would urge people wishing to have a stall at the carnival to book early and avoid disappointment.
“As part of the Jubilee theme, there will be a range of different activities for people of all ages to take part in. We hope that the community comes along to support Merton’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in this momentous year.”
