Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor John Bowcott recognised the borough’s top students from schools across the borough at the fifth Merton Celebration of Success event held at Raynes Park High School last week.
Students representing Perseid, Cricket Green, Melrose, Raynes Park, Ricards Lodge, Rutlish, St Mark’s Academy, SMART Centre, Ursuline High School and Wimbledon College all attended and received special awards for their individual achievements and success.
A wide range of young people also played host for the evening and helped make the evening a success including Merton Volunteer Police Cadets who served refreshments while students from Raynes Park High School became ‘ambassadors’ for the evening.
The evening was marked by performances from a selection of talented students. The acts included a dance piece by Ricards Lodge High School, scenes from William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ performed by St Mark’s Academy, vocal performances from Ursuline High School and solo vocal and instrumental pieces from Raynes Park students.
Merton Council’s Deputy Mayor Councillor John Bowcott said: ‘I was very proud to see our young people celebrate their successes. We have so many talented young people in Merton who work hard and achieve their best. The celebration event at Raynes Park was a great tribute to their hard work.’
Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Martin Whelton said: ‘The evening was a wonderful celebration of achievement and success. In Merton we have so many talented and gifted young people, and this evening was testament to their commitment and dedication. We should also pay tribute to their teachers along with their supportive parents and carers for their support. The evening demonstrated how everyone can aspire to be the best they can be and we should all be very proud of their achievements.’
