Colliers Wood By-Election announced

A Colliers Wood By-Election will take place on Thursday 8 August, following the sad death of Councillor Gam Gurung on Monday 24 June.

The nomination process for candidates is now open and will end on Friday 12 July. Candidates will be announced the afternoon of Friday 12 July.

Postal voting will be available for residents who are unable to visit a polling station on the day of the by-election. Postal vote application forms can be downloaded from the council website http://www.merton.gov.uk/howtovote or by contacting the Electoral Services helpline on 020 8545 3407. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 24 July.

Applications can also be made to appoint a proxy to vote on an elector’s behalf. The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 31 July.

Residents who are not currently registered as voters have until Wednesday 24 July to do so. Polling cards will be delivered to eligible electors from Friday 12 July until Sunday 14 July which include full details of the By-Election.

Chief Executive and Returning Officer for Merton Council, Ged Curran said: “Following the sad death of Councillor Gam Gurung, I have been asked by the local government electors to hold a By-Election so that the electorate can vote for a new Colliers Wood councillor. As Returning Officer I can announce that a Colliers Wood By-Election will take place on Thursday 8 August.”
