Merton Council held a flag raising ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day, 10 March 2014.

The ceremony, held outside of the Civic Centre building saw the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller raise the flag in front of local children from Morden, Abbotsbury and Poplar primary schools, residents and councillors.
A specially written Commonwealth affirmation was read out by the Mayor and The Rt Hon Sir John Wheeler JP DL read to the crowd a message from the Queen. Local bagpipe player Major Tony Kelly played before and after the flag was raised to mark this year’s Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller said: “Commonwealth Day is a chance to celebrate the diversity and appreciate the values of the union. It was great to see so many children dressed up in the colours of the different countries.”
