Merton Council is replacing every tree that was lost during the storms before Christmas.
As part of the council’s normal tree planting programme, every tree that was damaged or felled during the storms in November and December will be replaced over the next year. More than 100 public trees were lost in Merton during the storms.
By replacing the damaged trees as part of the usual planting programme, the council’s highways team can make sure that the correct species are being replaced in the right areas at the best time for them to grow successfully.
Cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: “The storms last winter caused a lot of damage to many of Merton’s trees and we are making sure that every one of them is replaced properly as part of our planting programme. Merton is one of the greenest boroughs in London and our trees really help to make the area more beautiful and green.”
