Mitcham Carnival’s colourful commonwealth-themed celebrations will kick off summer in Merton on Saturday 14 June, 12 noon at Three Kings Piece.
Britain’s Got Talent 2013 Live finalist Gabz will perform on the main stage with other acts on the day including Future Pro Wrestling, local community dance groups Dance Mode, Fusion and Love-to-Dance and stilt walkers. There will also be a family fun fair.
A second stage, compered by award winning comedian Bob Slayer, will feature musical acts DJ WrongTom and traditional Latin music from acoustic group Bahareque. Merton’s arts team will be launching its new Sports Blast initiative at the carnival too, and have an area for kids to play football, tennis and a range of other sports. The event, sponsored by Greenwich Leisure Limited, runs from 12 noon to 5pm with food stalls and refreshments for visitors.
Soldiers from the 210 Transport Squadron Royal Logistic Corps, based in Stonecot Hill Sutton, will be helping to set up on the day. They will also have a stall where they can talk to people interested in joining the reserves.
This year’s theme, Colours of the Commonwealth, celebrates the 65th anniversary of the union and the 2014 Commonwealth Games which is hosted in the UK this year.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: “This year’s carnival will be a fun-filled, colourful day for people of all ages. The event is still one of the most popular days in the calendar year.”
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “I look forward to taking part in this vibrant event celebrating the different cultures which make Mitcham such a great place to be in.
