Merton young people get set for Urban Games

Young people in the borough have the chance to take part in a range of fun sports at a free event in Morden on Saturday 12 July, 11am – 4pm, as part of Merton Council’s Sports Blast.

The council’s Urban Games, will feature taster sessions for young people to try out sports including football, tennis, netball, fitness, flag American football and BMX riding at the Peel House upper car park next to Sainsbury’s, Morden High Street. Follow up courses are available to Merton’s young residents aged 14-25, as well as families, from September 2014.

Residents can look forward to an Urban Games taster coming to their local town centre with one planned for Colliers Wood in August and others to be announced soon. The games are part of the Sports Blast project set up by the council following funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.

Merton’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “Young people don’t get much for free in this world. This is your chance to try out something you haven’t done before, something that you’ll enjoy and will open new doors to you. Get down to Sainsbury’s car park this weekend, or some of the other events over the summer, and have some sport-tasting fun for free! Urban Games are a blast – a Sports Blast!”
