‘For the first time in forever’ Mitcham transformed into an outdoor cinema to screen the Disney blockbuster, Frozen as hundreds of families from across the borough joined together for this year’s Merton Christmas Light Switch on.

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina illuminated Mitcham, with the help of Santa. Volunteers from the Merton Voluntary Service Council (MVSC) became Santa’s helpers for the evening and provided support throughout the event.

Gorringe Park Primary School and Bond Primary School kicked off the festivities as their choirs sang Christmas classics, followed by Tony from ‘The Singers Tutor’ who warmed up the crowd ready for Frozen. Mitcham’s market was also in full flow, featuring Film London’s KinoVan as well as stands from Merton Megacycle, Early Years and an arts and crafts stall.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: “It was fantastic to see the Mitcham community turn out in support of this great event. It was an honour to turn the lights on, and mark the beginning of Christmas in the borough. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along and to all those who contributed towards the event.”
