Council all set for second phase of Dundonald Primary School expansion

Merton Council awarded builders Kind and Company the second and final phase contract for the Dundonald Primary School expansion this week.

Kind and Company are all set to start work on site in March, when the first phase external works will have been completed. Contractors will replace the old pavilion in the park with a new two-storey building which will include modern changing facilities and a hall to let for community groups and local sports clubs. There will also be the necessary extra classrooms including a new school hall to accommodate children at Dundonald Primary School. Kind and Company will also manage the final external works to complete three tennis courts, an enlarged children’s public playground, and green gym.

Providing more school places at Dundonald Primary School is part of the council’s £80 million borough-wide investment in expanding Merton’s top schools so more children can be educated near to where they live and the commitment to provide 2,000 more school places over the next four years.

Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Martin Whelton said: “This is a very exciting phase in our work to provide more children living in the area the opportunity to be educated at an outstanding school.  We are facing unprecedented numbers of children living in Merton and we are committed to offering as many of them as possible the chance to benefit from an excellent education near to where they live. Last year we were only able to offer places to pupils living within 106 meters of Dundonald Primary School and when this work is completed, we will be able to offer this opportunity to many more local children. With more school places along with enhanced facilities for rec users and sports groups, they can also look forward to significantly better and more modern facilities.”
