Merton Council’s Great Bake-off

Merton Council is urging residents who are passionate about baking, to dust down their cake tins, whip up their favourite cake mix and showcase their culinary talents.

As part of this year’s Merton’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, the council is encouraging residents to get involved and show their affection for and commitment to the borough by decorating their edible masterpieces with a 50th Anniversary theme and links to Merton such as lavender or apples. The cake needs to fit a 12″x12″ cake board. The competition will take place at Mitcham Carnival on the 13 June. A gold and silver rosette will be up for grabs in each category.

Categories are:

  • 10 years and under, decorate a cupcake
  • 11-18 years, bake and decorate a cake
  • Adult bake
  • Adult decorate

Newly elected Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung said:

“I look forward to viewing and hopefully tasting the baking efforts of our residents. You never know, Merton may be home to the next Mary Berry!

“Mitcham Carnival is a fantastic start to the summer and the baking competition is just what’s needed to get the whole community involved in celebrating Merton. I am proud of Merton as a place where there is so much talent, which I am sure we’ll see at the carnival. The Golden Jubilee is an important milestone for local government in London. I know there will be many fantastic events over the coming months to celebrate this and Merton’s own bake-off is a great taste of things to come.”
