GLL becomes official national sponsor for Sport Relief

Merton Council’s leisure provider, GLL, has announced it will be Sport Relief’s official health and fitness partner in 2016. Under its consumer brand, BETTER, they have committed to raising over £500,000 in aid of Sport Relief.

Leisure centres in Merton will be supporting Sport Relief by hosting a number of events. Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham will be hosting a large scale Let’s Dance class for adults and families on both 5 and 6 March. With entry at just £3 per person, visitors will be able to take part in an aerobic fitness session inspired by Latin American Dancing that will put fitness levels to the test. Furthermore, the ‘Better Swim Challenge’ will be coming to Wimbledon Leisure Centre on 1 March  to raise donations for Sport Relief. ‘Better’ staff will be taking on the challenge by swimming 31 miles over six days in 31 ‘Better’ pools around the country. Residents will have the opportunity to come down and show support and cheer on staff.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “Sport Relief is a great cause and I’m really pleased our provider Greenwich Leisure will be staging events in our leisure centres this year. There are so many opportunities for residents to take part in them so whoever you are, young, old or in between, head down to our leisure centres and support Sport Relief!”

Notes to Editors

‘Better’ is brought to you by GLL, the UK’s leading charitable social enterprise. ‘Better’ give communities access to facilities which help improve their health and happiness, whether it be gyms, swimming pools, libraries, playgrounds, children’s centres and even world-class sporting venues.

The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games will be taking place between the 18 – 20 March, where residents can partake in numerous events and join the fundraising efforts. Events will include the Sport Relief Mile, where participants can pick a distance between 1 and 6 miles to walk, jog or run. The Sport Relief Games will also be holding both a swimathlon and cyclathon. By selecting to join ‘Team Better’ on the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Website all the money raised will go directly to Sport Relief and added to the #TeamBetter target.
