Don’t forget to register to vote

Merton Council is calling on residents to register to vote by Tuesday 17 April for the upcoming local council elections on Thursday 3 May

Your vote matters dont loose it

 Following a change to the voting registration system in 2014, it is now the responsibility of the individual to add their name to the electoral register. This can be done online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and entering your current address, date of birth and national insurance number. Residents who don’t have access to a computer can visit one of Merton’s libraries or contact electoral services on 020 8274 4901. The last day for registration is Tuesday 17 April.

To register to vote in the local council elections, you must be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen living in the UK and aged18 or over.

Most people who are already registered to vote will not need to do anything. However, you may need to register if:

  • You have not yet received a polling card at your address
  • You have received a letter asking you to register to vote
  • You have recently changed your address.

If you would rather vote by post than at the local polling station, postal voting application forms are available to download from the council website or by contacting Electoral Services helpline on 020 8545 3407. The deadline for postal voting applications is 5pm on Wednesday 18 April and residents must be registered to vote. For more information visit merton.gov.uk/voting. If you wish to vote by proxy, which means that someone else can vote on your behalf, you must be registered to vote and need to complete a Proxy application form by 5pm on Wednesday 25 April.
