Merton extends Alzheimer’s Society contract to provide Community Dementia Services for further two and a half years

Merton’s Cabinet has extended its contract with Alzheimer’s Society to provide Community Dementia Services for a further two and a half years.

Already highlighted as a model of best practice, Alzheimer’s Society has adapted its model to best serve communities and individuals in Merton affected by dementia.

Services are now provided across the borough, both in people’s homes, in the community and at the Dementia Hub Building in Mitcham. Some activities are facilitated by other organisations within the hub building, including Merton’s Adult Learning teams and the Attic Theatre Company.

The Community Dementia Services provided by Alzheimer’s Society are at the heart of the partnership with health and other voluntary and community organisations, supporting people to ‘live well’ with dementia and reducing the impact through timely information, advice, activities, support and education. The service also provides essential Carers and Relatives Information Support Programmes (CrISP) and the Strategies for Relatives 1-1 support programme.

Speaking after Cabinet, Councillor Peter McCabe, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said,

“I’m delighted that Merton Council is extending Alzheimer’s Society’s contract for a further two and a half years, allowing them to continue their important work  supporting those living with dementia and their carers and relatives in the borough.

“As someone whose own family has been affected by dementia, I know that reliable, integrated, accessible support is vital to address the challenges faced by those living with dementia.”
