Prepare your home for the winter

When the weather is warm, the last thing anyone wants to think about is the winter! However, it’s the perfect time to make some changes at home to help prepare and keep costs down during the colder months.

We’re sharing energy-saving tips from our partner Thinking Works that could help reduce energy bills.

  1. Loft insulation helps keep heat in during the winter and heat out during the summer. If you have a loft, make sure it is insulated to the recommended depth of 270mm to get the full benefit. You may be able to get free loft insulation through your energy supplier so give them a call.
  2. Draught excluders around windows and doors are a brilliant, cost-effective, way to keep heat in and are easy to install. You can get draught proofing materials from local hardware stores, and there are many helpful videos online on installing all types of draught proofing.
  3. If you have exposed pipes moving hot water around your home, such as in an airing cupboard, you can fit pipe insulation to stop the pipes losing as much heat. You can also use the same insulation for condensing boiler condensate pipes that run out from the boiler. Frozen condensate can stop your boiler from working, so insulating the condensate pipe is a great thing to do during the warmer months.
  4. Get a smart meter to keep an eye on how much energy you’re using and automatically submit meter readings. They are free, and you can contact your energy company to arrange installation.
  5. Check your boiler controls and bleed radiators to make sure your heating system is working optimally for winter. Having your boiler checked and serviced in summer is a good idea as engineers have better availability.
