Merton libraries kicked off this year’s Summer Reading Challenge with a spectacular mass outdoor high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session, with over 400 KS2 school children at Canons House and Grounds.
As well as a great workout the event, delivered in partnership with AFC Wimbledon and Nuffield Health, children also got the chance to work out alongside AFC Wimbledon players and mascot Haydon. Every attendee also received a free book to celebrate the reading challenges Sport and Games theme.
The challenge is a partnership between The Reading Agency and libraries. It officially launched nationwide on the 8th July, and will run all summer. Children who sign up at a Merton Library and read six books to complete the challenge, will receive a medal, certificate and entered into a draw to win prizes.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Caroline Cooper Marbiah, Cabinet Member for Sport and Heritage said: “This event is a brilliant way to kick off the reading challenge and is sure to get children excited about both reading and exercise as they head into the summer holidays.
“This year’s Sport, Games and exercise theme is a fitting one for us and our ambition to become London’s Borough of Sport.
“Our plans include providing more opportunities for our young residents to get active in the coming years – so hopefully today’s attendees will get the chance to play the sports and games they’ll read about during the summer.”
Children can sign up at any Merton library or online at the summer reading challenge website.
