Bishop Gilpin First School in Wimbledon is to forge links with Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum who are to sponsor their two new Walking Buses.
The new Walking Buses are in fact, not buses at all, but a group of parents who escort groups of children to and from school. The ‘buses’ walk in groups of up to 16 pupils and 2 adults who wear high visibility vests for extra safety.
Councillor Andrew Judge, Cabinet member for the Environment, said: ‘I am delighted that due to the kind sponsorship of Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, Bishop Gilpin’s schoolchildren and parents will be able to enjoy the benefits of the Walking Buses.
“This scheme is a great success in Dundonald First School and I hope that other sponsors will come forward to promote walking buses in more of the borough’s schools.
Councillor Judge added “Merton Council is committed to creating a better quality of life in the borough and aims to reduce congestion, improve safety and encourage walking and healthier children.”
