Merton Council’s Mayor for 2001/02 will be Councillor Stuart Pickover following the withdrawal on health grounds of Councillor Sam Chaudhry.
Councillor Pickover has represented Dundonald ward since 1994 and has been a resident of the borough since 1970 after moving south from his home town of Accrington, Lancashire.
He is married to his wife of 34 years, Concepta, who was born in Tullamore, Eire and together they have two sons and five grandchildren. Concepta will become Mayoress for Councillor Pickover’s term of office.
A printer by trade, Councillor Pickover started his career in Accrington and worked for several companies in London before joining the Daily Mail where he stayed until 1991.
Councillor Pickover is a keen bowler and member of the Merton Bowls Club and the envisaged Merton Indoor Bowls Club. He is also a Burnley FC supporter and tries to see them whenever they play in the London area.
Councillor Pickover said: “I will become Mayor due to Councillor Sam Chaudhry’s standing down because of ill health.
“Sam has made a very difficult decision and has been very dignified and selfless and has acted in the best interests of the borough. I fully appreciate that it must have been a tremendous disappointment to stand down and that has given me extra impetus to fulfil the role and represent Merton in a very positive way and to the best of my abilities.”
