Merton’s Indoor Sports Hall Athletics Sessions for Children
Children will be running and jumping when Merton Council’s annual Indoor Sports Hall Athletic sessions for children begin on Monday 29 October at the Priory Middle School in Wimbledon.
Merton children aged between seven and 12 are being given the opportunity to participate in a variety of traditional athletics events such as running, throwing and jumping which are scaled down for indoor use, for example throwing foam javelins and standing long jump.
The winter sessions have been running for seven years and they provide Merton children with the opportunity to develop and improve their skills, supervised and encouraged by experienced coaches, in a fun, safe and friendly environment.
The budding athletes will also have the chance to represent Merton in the Inter Borough Sports Hall Athletics competition, which takes place during the winter. Merton has had great successes in the competition in the past. Last year we came third overall and previously Merton has won.
The weekly sessions take place on Monday evenings from 4.30pm – 6pm priced £1.50. There is no need to book, children are asked to turn up at the school in Queens Road wearing comfortable clothing and non-marking trainers or tennis shoes.
Councillor Su Assinen, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “The Indoor Sports Hall Athletic sessions are a fantastic opportunity for children to practice their athletics skills in an organised environment. They also get the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practise when they compete for the Borough. I am sure the sessions will be extremely popular with children in Merton as they have been in the past”.
