Housing Benefit claimant found guilty of benefit fraud
Merton Council’s fraud stoppers campaign achieved another success against benefit fraud when Sally Moss was found guilty of falsely claiming over £20,000 of Housing Benefit at Kingston Crown Court on 4 October 2001.
Miss Moss, from Green Lane, Morden, claimed Housing Benefit for a number of years without declaring her partner lived with her. This was until Merton Council’s benefit fraud team visited her after receiving an anonymous tip off.
She was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, along with a two-year supervision order. Merton Council will recover all the benefit Miss Moss fraudulently claimed through Merton’s official debt collector’s service.
Chris Johnson, Merton Council’s Head of Audit said: “This successful action highlights the work undertaken to uncover and deal with benefit fraud. Although most claimants are honest and have nothing to fear, we have a responsibility to tackle those who are not.”
