School meals provider wins prestigious Heartbeat Award
Merton’s Environmental Services department has awarded Initial Catering Services a Heartbeat Award for the high standards of catering they provide to the borough’s First and Middle schools.
The company has been working with Merton and the Local Health Authority for the last two years in order to meet the standards necessary to gain the nationally recognised award.
It means children in Merton’s schools are provided healthier meals by a company that has had to prove it is committed to offering a healthier choice of food in a healthy environment and is in line with the Health of the Nation targets.
To win the award Initial had to show in each of Merton’s schools:
·high standards of food hygiene
·the provision of healthier food choices
A presentation ceremony, hosted by the Mayor of Merton, is taking place on 27 November and will be the first of its kind in Merton.
Following on from this first success, plans are in place for other caterers to work towards achieving a Heartbeat Award in the New Year. Particular emphasis will be in areas where catering inequalities may be tackled such as work canteens and roadside cafes.
Any caterers that are interested in applying for the award or would like further information should call 020 8545 3024.
