Merton gives Wimbledon Theatre a summer to remember

Merton Council has awarded the prestigious Cannizaro Park Theatre Festival contract to Wimbledon Theatre for the next three years.

The Cannizaro Park Theatre Festival, first set up in 1989, runs for four weeks every summer. The popular outdoor festival provides the opportunity for both residents and visitors to Merton, to see a variety of performances in the beautiful surroundings of the council owned park.

It has become an important summer cultural event attracting an impressive 13,000 people last year. Over the past 12 years the festival has attracted acts such as Jongleurs, the String of Pearls Orchestra, Lindisfarne, Courtney Pine and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.

Councillor Su Assinen, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “We were impressed with Wimbledon Theatre’s commitment and knowledge of local artists and community groups, as well as their track record of quality programming of professional and amateur companies.

“Merton Council and Wimbledon Theatre are looking forward to building on the continued success of the Cannizaro Park Theatre Festival over the next three years.”
