When the learning stops the fun starts

Merton children will have even more to look forward to after school thanks to the New Opportunities Fund Out of School Hours Childcare Programme, which recently announced grants to help five new childcare projects open in Merton.

The childcare projects formed part of a group application to the New Opportunities Fund led by Merton Council’s Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership. When open, the childcare clubs will offer a place for children to have fun and play, as well as providing a safe environment for children of working parents.

Different independent groups, including voluntary organisations and private businesses, will run the new clubs. The clubs will also create 40 part-time job opportunities.

The new projects include:
– Breakfast and after school club at Priory C.E. Primary School
– After school club at Wimbledon Chase Primary School
– After school club and holiday play scheme at Hillcross Primary School
– After school and Saturday club at Wimbledon College R.C. High School
– Holiday sports play scheme based at Wimbledon High School.

Councillor Maxi Martin, Cabinet Member for Primary Education and Children’s Services and Councillor Karl Carter, Cabinet Member for Secondary Education and Lifelong Learning said: “We are delighted funding has been granted for the five new childcare projects. The clubs will provide a safe environment for many children in the borough and many hours of fun. We also welcome this as an opportunity to further develop the partnership between the boroughs private and voluntary organisations and local authority.’

The New Opportunities Fund Out of School Hours Childcare Programme provides one-year grants to help breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday play schemes start up. Voluntary organisations and private businesses can apply for grants.
