Deputy Leader thanks Merton staff involved
Councillor Danny Connellan, Deputy Leader and former chair of the Planning Committee has formally thanked Merton’s Planning and Legal departments following the news of the Safeway inquiry.
After three year’s consideration, the Government Inspector yesterday rejected the Safeway plans for a supermarket and this has handed Wimbledon Football Club a life line.
Councillor Connellan said: ” The thanks must go out to the sterling work done by members of the planning development control officers and especially the amount of work the legal team put in to achieve this result.
“It is really good news and I think their work over a long period of time played a huge part in achieving this result.”
Merton Council and Wimbledon fans, hopefully together with Wimbledon Football Club directors, can now plan to have discussions with Safeway about returning the site to the club for the development of the club’s long awaited new stadium.
