Merton’s celebrations start this Friday
Merton’s Jubilee Weekend starts this Friday 12 July and promises something for all.
The weekend begins with the arrival of the Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay into the borough at 5.20pm. Many runners will carry the baton through Merton, including Cricket legend Ian Botham, before Sally Gunnell runs the last leg into Morden Park at 6.50pm.
An evening celebration event that will be covered by BBC TV and radio, takes place in Morden Park between 5:30 and 7:30 pm and will include circus entertainers, a fun fair, dancers, drummers and high lights from the Polka Theatre’s latest production. This will be hosted by a celebrity presenter.
The action then moves to Merton Abbey Mills which is hosting a free Jazz concert from 7.30pm. On Saturday, Merton Music Foundation holds a Gala Concert at Wimbledon Theatre from 7.30pm (call 020 8540 0362 for tickets).
Sunday is the first day of the Cannizaro Theatre Festival which includes lunchtime jazz. In the evening there is Mama Mia: Party in the Park, a music treat that features Abba, Bee Gees and Grease tribute bands. Call 020 8540 0362 for tickets and details.
Mitcham Cricket Club is also holding a Jubilee Challenge match against Hambledon on Friday 12 July at 1pm on Mitcham Cricket Green.
