Merton Council showing support for AFC
Merton Council will officially show its support for AFC Wimbledon as the team play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, 21 August.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Judge, the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Edith Macauley and Cabinet Member for Special Projects, Councillor Mark Allison will take their seats to watch Merton’s footballing finest take on Chipstead.
The game kicks off at 7.45pm at Kingsmeadow, the New Malden ground AFC share with Kingstonian FC, and the atmosphere promises to be electric with several thousand fans expected.
Councillor Andrew Judge, said: “We are attending the game, not only as football fans, but to emphasise Merton’s commitment to AFC Wimbledon and the future of football in Merton.
“The team’s founders and staff have done a tremendous job in building a team from scratch that has a huge fan base, in such a short space of time. Saturday’s result was fantastic, and hopefully there is a bright future ahead for AFC. Merton will do all it can to help them build and grow into a successful football team.”
