Balloon launch marks schools change

School children from across the borough will celebrate the launch of Merton’s primary and secondary schools next week with a special balloon launch.

The event takes place at 11.30 am on Monday 30 September at Poplar Primary School field and will see 100 balloons released. 54 of the balloons, one for each Merton school, will have the school’s address attached in order to take part in a race.

The school, whose balloon is found furthest from Merton and then contacted by the finder, will win a prize.

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Edith Macauley, and Councillor Danny Connellan will attend the event, which has been sponsored by NewSchools, the company seeking to enter into a PFI contract with the London Borough of Merton.

Councillor Geraldine Stanford, said: “This will be a really nice way to mark the end of one era and our move into the next. The Schools Reorganisation team and the schools have worked really hard during the last three years to change our educational structure and I’m very proud of their achievements.”
