Closure of the Mobile Library

Due to significant cuts in this year’s budget, it has been necessary for the Council to make savings in many areas, and regrets that this has led to the closure of Merton’s Mobile Library service.

The last day of service will be Saturday 29th March. Any Merton library member will be able to borrow books from the Mobile Library up to this date but will need to return the books to one of Merton’s main or branch libraries.

Councillor Su Assinen, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said:

“The closure of the mobile library was a difficult decision for us to make, however, yearly figures showed that it continued to be the part of the libraries service with the highest yearly cost, in proportion to the number of users.

“The consultation currently being carried out on the mobile library will look into finding alternative ways of meeting the individual needs of current users through the Home Visits Service, the Deposit Collections Service, The Talking Books by Post Service or your local library, as most appropriate. This can be completed on board the library until the last day of service.”
