National Parenting Week runs from Monday 20 October 2003. To celebrate the week the Council is reminding parents of the services offered by Merton Parent Support.
Merton Parent Support offers a service to all parents/carers of young people aged 10 – 17. A telephone helpline provides information on local and national organisations and agencies targeting specific help and information on a range of issues. The helpline number is 020 8274 4967. Parent support also offers individual appointments and ongoing support.
Also free group sessions are run over an eight-week period. The course provides information and support in a relaxed and friendly environment. They are run during term time and a crèche is provided.
A different topic is focused on each week and outside speakers attend half of these sessions. Speakers have included representatives from education, the police and outreach workers from the youth awareness programme. One two-hour session is devoted to information and discussion on drugs and alcohol. Sessions can also include information and relevant speakers on further education and training, domestic violence and general health and relaxation, depending on the needs and wishes of the group.
The two hour session on drugs and alcohol will be held this Friday 17 October 2003 from 10am to 12pm at the Garden School, Pollards Hill. This session is open to all parents/carers who wish to raise their awareness and receive information on national and local agencies. This will include the support available to young people and their families within schools and the local community.
The next eight week programme will start in Januray 2004 in conjunction with the Parent Gateway Project.
For further information on Merton Parent Support and/or the eight week sessions, please contact Tina Jablonski or Beda Marcel on 020 8274 4967 or just come along to the group on Friday 17 October.
