A regular series of meetings will take place called, ‘The Friends of Merton’s Parks and Open Spaces Forum’. This was agreed at a meeting between thirteen groups representing the Parks and Open Spaces of Merton earlier this month.
The meetings will be held to discuss parks issues affecting all groups across the borough. The Friends Groups will have an opportunity to communicate their views to the council, and the council will be able to respond and provide information that is requested from members. The forum will be a sub-group of the Council’s main Environment and Road Safety Forum, which is chaired by Councillor Andy Cole.
Chris Mountford, Facilities and Technical Manager for Merton, said:
“Our parks are a source of pleasure for so many people in the borough, and this forum is an example of how they can also form the basis of co-operation and positive relations between the council and the community. Since their formation a few years ago, the Friends Groups have had a really positive impact on our parks, and we are looking forward to working even more closely with them.”
The idea for a forum was first conceived at a conference in the summer held at Morden Park House, attended by all Friends Groups in the borough. The first forum meeting will take place at the Civic Centre in the New Year.
The Council would be pleased to hear from any other interested groups or individuals who have a strong feeling for a local park or open space. Please write to Chris Mountford, Leisure Facilities and Technical Manager at the Civic Centre or contact by phone 020 8545 3657
