Merton announces new charges for Weighbridge at Amenity Way

Due to annual increases in waste disposal costs and landfill taxes, Merton Council is currently revising its’ waste disposal charges. This year’s new disposal charges and arrangements will come into effect at Amenity Way off Garth Road from 1 April 2004.

Residents in cars can dispose of waste and recyclables free of charge at the Reuse and Recycling Centre off Amenity Way. The height barrier at the entrance is set at 1.93m (6ft 4) to allow access by private cars and prevent dumping of trade waste from vans. Trailers are not permitted for safety reasons and in order to maintain operational efficiency. The centre is open from 8am until 4pm every day, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Persons in vans, high-sided vehicles or cars with trailers can use the Waste Transfer facility at Amenity Way. The vehicle will be weighed on entry and before departure, and will be subject to a charge that must be paid before the vehicle is allowed to leave the site. The new charge for waste disposed is £75 including VAT per tonne, with a minimum charge of £25 for general waste. Higher charges may apply for special categories of waste. This new charging arrangement applies to all Weighbridge users, and there will be no free disposal or concessions made to non-car users. The Weighbridge entrance is open 8am until 4pm Monday to Friday, 8am until 1pm Saturday, and closed on Sundays. It is also closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Merton Council also offers a bulky waste collection service for residents for large items such as furniture or appliances. The minimum charge is £15 for up to 5 items. Fridges and freezers require specialised treatment on disposal so a charge of £10 per item is made for collecting these. To book a collection, please call 020 8274 4902.

For enquiries please phone the Merton Council Waste Helpline on 020 8274 4902.
