The Carnival is coming to town

Magnificent Mitcham Carnival is set to return once again this summer and promises to be one of the best ever.

The event will take place on 19 June on Three Kings’ Piece. The fun will get underway when a carnival parade made up of vintage cars, cheerleaders, motorbikes, a steel band, and lots of other vibrant floats, leaves Figges Marsh at 12 midday. It will make its way through Mitcham town centre to Three Kings Piece, where the Carnival will be officially opened and the floats judged by the Mayor of Merton.

The theme of this year’s carnival is, ‘Mitcham celebrates the Olympics’. The theme will be reflected in the floats taking part in the parade, as well as the special acts that will be there to entertain the crowds.

The carnival itself will carry on all afternoon and feature a live bird of prey demonstration and an exciting Cowboy Western trick and stunt riding show. Six Little League football teams will battle it out in an annual five-aside football tournament, which will kick off when the parade reaches Three Kings Piece. And of course there will be the hundreds of trade and charity stalls, arena events, and fairground rides.

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Margaret Brierly, said:

“The Olympics theme for this year’s carnival is promising to make it really good fun. We will be able to join in the country’s efforts at proving what a lively place London is, and how deserving it is of winning the bid to host the Olympics in 2012.

“We hope as many people as possible from all over Merton will come to the carnival as I’m sure there will be something for everyone.”
