Merton travel agents fly high

A survey conducted recently by Merton Council’s Trading Standards department has shown that travel agents within the borough of Merton generally offer accurate prices on their last minute package holidays.

The survey was carried out to check if the holidays and prices advertised in the windows of travel agents matched what was actually available to book. The standard set by travel agents in Merton proved to be of a high quality and the actual prices matched the prices advertised. However, reports did show that a small minority of holidays advertised were not actually available.

The results also highlight the need for travel agents to tighten up on informing customers about the extra charge levied for credit card transactions, typically two per cent of the total cost of the holiday. To meet with legal requirements, the council has also reinforced the need for travel agents to display notices informing customers of these charges at sales desks and shop entrances.

Councillor Linda Kirby, Cabinet Member for Environmental Quality, said: “I am pleased that the survey shows Merton’s travel agents are meeting the vast majority of their legal requirements. However to improve the service further steps must be taken to ensure all consumers are advised of the additional cost they will incur when booking by credit card.”
