Merton Drug and Alcohol Action Team has teamed up with the Community Drug Service for South London to establish a support group for parents, carers, families and friends that have been affected by someone else’s drug use.
The group has been formed to ensure local residents get the support they need when faced with a family member who misuses drugs. This follows research showing parents and families can play a vital role in young people’s attitudes towards drugs.
It aims to provide parents, carers, family and friends of those who misuse drugs with information on drug misuse and advice on how to cope with the fear and uncertainty that drug misuse brings to a family.
The group will meet every Friday at Carers Support Merton, 1st Floor, Unit 2, 24 Deer Park Road, SW19 3UA. One to one support and advice will be available from 1.45pm prior to the support group beginning at 3.30pm.
Merton Drug and Alcohol Action Team have produced a guide covering key facts about drugs, the best way to communicate with young people and where to get information and advice. The guide is available to parents for free.
A 24hour confidential and free helpline called FRANK is available on 0800 77 66 00 to provide help for anyone with questions about drugs or to offer advice, help or just a chat. Information can also be obtained by visiting http://www.talktofrank.com
