Schools debate for chance to represent Merton in the London Challenge.
Year Nine pupils at four separate Merton schools will be vying for the honour to represent Merton at this year’s annual London Challenge Debating final.
The 13-year-olds from Ricards Lodge, Bishopsford, Wimbledon College and Ursuline will use their wits and powers of persuasion to battle it out for the right to compete in the London Challenge Final next month.
The heats take place next Tuesday May 24 at the Chaucer Centre, Morden between 9am and 3.45pm. The day will open with Bishopsford playing Ricards on the debate ‘ this house would ban human cloning.’ Wimbledon College will then take on Ursuline on the issue ‘this house believes that space exploration is a waste of money’. Following each debate, questions will be taken from the audience.
Subsequent topics for debate will then be revealed with the students given just 40 minutes to prepare before they have to take to the floor. Organiser Barara Harper, a Literacy Officer at Merton Council explains:
“The students really will have to think on their feet. I believe that debate is an important learning tool as well as being fun. It will give the students confidence and help them develop their critical thinking skills”
The successful team will then get the honour to represent Merton at the English Speaking Union sponsored London challenge Final at City Hall on June 27.
