Leisure Funding Boost

Staying fit and healthy will be even easier in Merton with an investment announced for the borough’s leisure centres over the next two years.

Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) in partnership with the London Borough of Merton and Merton College are investing £4.5 million into local leisure centres, ensuring all facilities are modern and of a high quality.

Investments include:

·Wimbledon LC Village Changing Rooms (2005)
·Wimbledon LC Health Suite (2005)
·Morden Park Pool Changing Rooms (2005)
·Cannons LC Health and Fitness Centre (2005-6)
·Cannons LC Changing Rooms (2006)
·Morden Park Pool Sports Hall (2007)

The investment will also include substantial maintenance to plant rooms, heating, ventilation and water treatments to ensure that the buildings remain safe, environmentally sound and efficient.

GLL took over the management of all council-operated leisure centre’s in 2000 and have so far spent over £1 million on a number of local leisure facilities. The latest investment has been secured via an innovative funding package to further update the existing facilities.

Councillor Linda Kirby, Merton’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Quality said:

“This is great news for residents across the borough who enjoy the use of these leisure centres. This new investment will improve the facilities as well as safeguard their future, the council will continue to set prices for the facilities with a guarantee of full public access at affordable prices.”

“This investment will enable use to provide everyone in Merton with leisure facilities fit for the 21st century at a price everyone can afford. Residents will be able to enjoy state of the art facilities which rival those of private fitness centres.”
