Wimbledon Town Centre will become a Controlled Drinking Zone (CDZ) from Monday 24 April.
Police will have the power to confiscate alcohol and issue fixed penalty notices to people seen drinking in the area, under the order.
A CDZ is an area where the local authority has pinpointed that public drinking is causing a nuisance, annoyance to others or is likely to result in disorder of some kind.
Richard Rawes, Merton Council’s Director of Environment and Regeneration, said:
“Wimbledon Town Centre was chosen for implementation of the zone following anti-social behaviour problems. All licensed premises in the town are included in the zone and 99 per cent of residents were in favour of the plan when recently asked.”
