Canons ahead of the rest

Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham is bigger and better than ever after an extensive revamp.

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Geraldine Stanford officially unveiled the new facilities this week.

Merton Council funded the renovations as part of a £2.5 million capital investment, which will also see improvements made to Wimbledon Leisure Centre and Morden Park Pool. Greenwich Leisure Limited, managers of the three centres, also assisted with the renovations.

The former kitchen, balcony and several offices of the complex have been removed to create the new Wellness Health and Fitness Centre. There are now over 100 stations within the Fitness Centre, including a programmable area, treadmills, step machines, cross trainers, weight machines and stretching areas.

The refurbishment has also provided a new reception area, dance studio, crèche, meeting room and new facilities for activities such as yoga.

Councillor Tariq Ahmad, Merton’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Traffic Management, said:

“The Council’s investment in Canons Leisure Centre emphasises the long-term commitment to providing modern facilities for the community.

“These improvements underline the Council’s ambition to improve the overall fitness of our community through the provision of facilities which are both accessible and affordable.”
