‘ I visited the site of the fire this morning to thank the emergency services who worked side by side to ensure an effective and speedy response, and for containing the incident as quickly and efficiently as they did. Council officers were immediately on the scene, providing welfare and care at Wimbledon Park School, for neighbouring residents and businesses who had to be evacuated while the area was made safe, as well as making necessary road closures.
‘An investigation into the safety of the building will be made by the council. The police and fire brigade will be looking into the cause of the fire today’
Councillor Oonagh Moulton, elected member for Wimbledon Park Ward said:
‘This is a tragic event that is being felt deeply by residents in Wimbledon Park. The family are much-valued members of our community and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.
‘We would like to praise everyone who acted to help in particular the emergency and council services who acted so swiftly, and to Wimbledon Park School who made their premises available so quickly for all those displaced in neighbouring flats. We shall be working to offer all the support necessary to help those in need at this time.’
