A pioneering scheme to identify and highlight southwest London’s green guardians reaches a climax on Friday 17 November 2006. Penny Poyzer, star of BBC’s No Waste Like Home, will be the key speaker and present the Green Guardian community awards at a gala ceremony to be held at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey (from 7.00pm).
The innovative award scheme to promote green community initiatives across southwest London results from a unique partnership between five boroughs (Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth) and the main newspaper publishers in their area – the South London Guardian.
Each borough hosted its own award scheme during October, attracting hundreds of entries from businesses, schools, residents and local organisations. The winners in each borough will be at the awards ceremony on Friday to learn who will be the regional green champion in the following categories:
· Green household
· Green school
· Green business
· Young environmentalists
· New project
· Green champion
Penney Poyzer, who also helped judge the final entries, says: “I am delighted to be involved in these awards. We only have one planet and it is vitally important that everyone does what he or she can to protect it. The Green Guardian Awards are a very practical and effective way of encouraging people to do this. The work being done by some of the finalists is truly inspiring.”
