This year Merton’s Holocaust Memorial Day event will be held in the Council Chamber at Merton Civic Centre on Sunday 27 January at 3pm.
The 2008 theme for the Memorial day is Imagine… Remember, Reflect, React. This asks people to Remember the past, reflect on the present and React to create a better future.
Local residents from different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, along with councillors from all the political parties in Merton attend the ceremony to pay their respects to the victims of the Holocaust.
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on 27th January each year. This marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The Memorial day event in Merton is free and everyone is welcome.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor John Dehaney will be there on the day and comments:
” Merton is a wonderfully diverse borough, and one where people from different cultures, faiths and race get along in one community. The public event marking Holocaust Memorial Day shows Merton recognises and values differences and that we are continuously working towards a cohesive community.”
