Merton Council welcomes giant martial arts academy

Merton residents have no excuse not to keep healthy now Europe’s biggest Choi Kwang Do academy is just days away from opening its doors in Morden.

Merton Council is delighted Chief Instructor Vince Cassar, who has been teaching the martial art in Morden for ten years, chose to set up the centre in the town – which, as he says, has great public transport links and being on the Northern Line makes it easy to get to from other parts of London as well.

The art’s founder Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi will officially open the new centre in Abbotsbury Road on Monday 28 April and as part of the ceremony a team of American experts will give a demonstration of this dynamic martial art.

Choi Kwang Do aims to enhance the individual’s health as well as teach practical and effective self-defence techniques. It is non-competitive and open to all abilities and age groups – so even if games was not your favourite subject at school you can still enjoy this martial art.

Mr Cassar said: “At a time when people are worried about the problem of obesity Choi Kwang Do is a way we can all combat it. It can help keep you fit and teach you self-defence and confidence.”

Environment and Regeneration Director Lyn Carpenter said: “This is fantastic news for Morden and another indication of how our aims to regenerate the town centre and put our residents’ needs first are attracting new businesses to the area.

“The Choi Kwang Do Academy will also help our residents get fit and stay healthy and safe.”
