As the new school year is about to begin, Merton Council is advising drivers to expect traffic delays lasting several weeks while the borough’s old metal gas mains are replaced.
Temporary three-way traffic lights are in operation at South Wimbledon junction of Merton Rd and Kingston Rd to guide traffic safely through the roadworks, which are expected to last until early December. The traffic signals at this junction will return to normal in October, although there will still be temporary traffic signals in Merton Rd nearer to The Broadway. In order to minimise disruption all works on main roads will stop during the Christmas period and up until the January sales are over.
Cabinet Member for Planning and Traffic Management, Cllr William Brierly said: ‘We understand that drivers are going to experience disruption and inevitable delays while the vital and necessary work is carried out. I would ask drivers for their patience whilst the new gas pipes are installed.
“We are working closely with Southern Gas Networks to make sure everything runs as smoothly and as quickly as possible and to keep disruption to a minimum. I would also urge motorists to take care when driving around the areas affected by the roadworks and to thank everyone in advance for their patience and co-operation.”
