Merton calls on kids to get active
Merton Council is now taking bookings for this year’s Active Plus, the year long programme of sports, arts and creative activities for young people.
Organised by Merton Council, these Active Plus courses will take place during the February half term (16-20 February), Easter holidays (6-17 April) and the May half term (26-29 May). Places can now be booked online at http://www.merton.gov.uk/activeplus
The wide variety of courses on offer include athletics, gymnastics, sailing, horse riding, trampolining, watersports, crafts and drama. All courses are supervised and taught by qualified and experienced coaches and tutors. All equipment is provided.
There are courses for children from the ages of 4 – 16 years. Taster sessions and beginners courses start in the February half term, with whole weeks of sport taking place during the Easter and May half term holidays.
Harris Academy, Mitcham, is also offering a range of courses through half term and Easter. These include sports camps, the cricket academy and the Hawks Basketball club. Residents interested in taking part in these courses should visit http://www.harrismerton.org.uk
Merton Council cabinet member for community services, Councillor Maurice Groves said: “Active Plus gives Merton’s young people a great opportunity to get fit, discover a new talent or just have fun doing an activity with friends and family. We have so much to choose from that there’s bound to be something to suit everybody. Places on these courses do go fast so I would encourage residents to book now.
“Have a change from your computer games and switch the TV off. Get active and enjoy yourselves in the holidays. Merton is again putting the needs of our residents first. We want to offer more opportunity to get out and do something different. Active Plus does just that and at very reasonable prices.”
