Hillcross comes out of special measures

A Merton school has been taken out of special measures after impressing school inspectors with its improvements during the last year.

Hillcross Primary School was placed on special measures in February last year – meaning it had to be regularly monitored by Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI). However, during their latest visit the inspectors were so impressed by the school’s performance they turned the monitoring visit into a full Ofsted inspection – which Hillcross passed with outstanding, good and satisfactory grades.

The school in Ashridge Way, Morden, scooped ‘outstanding’ marks for the effectiveness of its early years foundation stage and ‘good’ marks in providing children with personal development and well-being, offering care and support, its curriculum and other activities and the quality of its leadership and management. Inspectors awarded the school with ‘satisfactory’ marks for its teaching and learning provision and its achievement and standards. HMI expect standards and achievement to be good by the end of this current academic year.

Deputy headteacher Julian Greenfield said: “We are all absolutely delighted, staff, parents and pupils. It has been a long hard year but everyone has worked together incredibly hard to turn this school around and this fantastic Ofsted report is the result.”

Merton Council’s director of children, schools and families Yvette Stanley said: “Everyone at Hillcross Primary School has worked extremely hard to bring their school out of special measures and this has been reflected in the inspectors’ report which highlighted the quality of the school’s leadership and management as well the care and support it offers its pupils.”

Merton Council’s cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Debbie Shears said: “Children’s schooling is understandably one of our residents’ biggest concerns so we are determined to do everything we can to put our young people first and further drive up education standards in Merton. The achievement of Hillcross in coming out of special measures is a clear example of how determination and hard work can result in success.”
