Opportunity knocks at Merton’s JobFest 09

Residents keen to find out more about employment and training opportunities in the borough will find everything they need at the Merton JobFest 09 on Tuesday 1 September in Mitcham.

The fair takes place at South Mitcham Community Centre in Phipps Bridge between 10am and 4pm and visitors will have an opportunity to speak directly to over 200 local employers, colleges and voluntary organisations about employment issues, training, apprenticeships and how to improve their job prospects.

Job seekers can enter a free raffle to win a 22″ television on the day and a light Caribbean style lunch is also on offer. A free crèche will be also be available to give parents and carers time to look at all their options.

Local organisations will offer table-top workshops covering topics relating to employment and recruitment while some local employers will be looking for applications from suitable job seekers in relation to current vacancies in their businesses.

Councilor Linda Scott, cabinet member for housing and community services said: “We are pleased to be hosting such an important and useful event for the people of Merton. This is just one of the practical ways in which the council can help residents who have become unemployed or are struggling financially at this time.

“There will be so much on offer for everyone that attends and we hope this event will be particularly helpful to young people in Merton who are looking for employment in today’s difficult economic climate.”

Employers include Connaught the council’s maintenance contractor and Merton College, who will be advising on apprenticeships.
