Merton Council is teaming up with Straight plc, a UK supplier of compost bins and recycling containers, to offer residents the opportunity to buy their own compost bin for a knock-down price.
The offer is open from now until the end of March 2011. Residents interested in buying a council-subsidised compost bin should log on to http://www.merton.gov.uk/compost and choose the one most suitable for their needs. Alternatively, they can call 0844 571 4444 at the following times:
Monday to Friday: 8am-8pm
Residents taking advantage of this offer will pay only £5 for a 220-litre composter and £8 for a 330-litre bin, with a £5 delivery charge per order. Residents can buy up to four subsidised compost bins per household.
Merton Council director of environment and regeneration Chris Lee said: ‘Funding initiatives like this is one practical way in which we can encourage our residents to recycle more and reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill. Composting food and garden waste is one way we could all make a huge difference. It cuts down on the need to transport garden waste for reprocessing, reducing vehicle emissions. Making your own compost also provides excellent nutrition for growing healthy plants and vegetables, and means you don’t have to spend money on buying compost – good for the wallet and the environment too.’
