Merton Council is reminding residents to take advantage of its free bulky waste collection service this New Year.
Those lucky enough to receive a new fridge, microwave or maybe furniture this Christmas, and whose council tax bill is up to date can see their old possessions taken off their hands for free. Residents eligible for the service can take advantage of the free collection of up to five items once every three months. The free collection includes fridges and freezers, TVs and bagged smaller electrical items such as kettles and toasters. There is a minimum fee of £10 for additional items covering up to three additional items with £4 charged for the ninth item and each thereafter. Booking a collection can be done by telephoning 020 8274 4902.
As an alternative, residents can also check which retailers collect old appliances for recycling as part of a take-back scheme. More information on take-back schemes can be found on the Wrap (Waste & Resources Action Programme) website: http://www.wrap.org.uk
Merton Council cabinet member for performance and implementation Councillor Mark Betteridge said: ‘Christmas is a time when some of our residents may have been lucky enough to get new electrical appliances such as fridges, hairdryers and TVs. Our free bulky waste collection service enables Merton’s residents to ensure their older larger items are disposed of responsibly. We believe this initiative will result in cleaner streets and reduce the number of fly tips. Clean streets lead to a sense of pride in where we live, which can have other important benefits such as reducing the fear of crime.”
