Help is at hand for people with financial worries

People in Merton with financial worries can now get help and support from a new Credit Union. Merton Council, in partnership with Merton Priory Homes, will be opening the new Credit Union for Merton residents on Wednesday, March 16th at 1pm at Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, SM4 5DX.

Merton Council and Merton Priory Homes are launching the new service together following the successful expansion of the established Croydon Credit Union. The Croydon, Merton & Sutton Credit Union Ltd will provide valuable financial support to local residents. Services include cheap and flexible loan options regardless of credit history, an easy savings scheme and free life insurance. As co-operative, the Credit Union is run by local people with and any profit is passed onto members, so the money is kept in the local community.

The Credit Union for Merton will run every Wednesday from 10am until 3pm at the Civic Centre. No appointments are necessary.

Pauline Ford, managing director for Merton Priory Homes, part of leading affordable housing provider Circle Anglia, said:

“Many of our residents do not have access to the most basic financial services such as having a bank account or having access to affordable credit and money advice. This is a good example of successful partnership work and it’s important that we continue to make people with financial worries aware that there is quality support available.”

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, Leader of Merton Council, added:

“Having the Credit Union in Merton is great news for our residents and we are very pleased to be able to host the credit union here at the council’s civic centre. Working together with Merton Priory Homes we hope to encourage residents to save more and take advantage of the many different services that are there to help them through these difficult times.’

The Credit Union launch will be followed by the popular ‘Money Talk’ event on March 17th, 1.30-4.30pm at St Theresa’s Church Hall, Bishopfords Road, Morden, SM2 6BZ. At the event money saving experts will offer advice to residents to help them get through these difficult times.
