Exceptional young students from Merton’s secondary schools, academies, special schools and South Thames College were honoured at a special Celebrating Success awards ceremony last night (17 November), hosted by St Mark’s Academy.

Following another successful year for GCSE results in Merton, students from across the borough were nominated by their schools to receive special awards for individual achievements and success.

Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor Chris Edge, Merton Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Alambritis and Cabinet member for education, Councillor Peter Walker, attended the ceremony to present students with their awards. Students from St Mark’s Academy, Bishopsford Arts College and Raynes Park High School, along with Merton Music Foundation, gave musical performances at the event in front of governors, teachers, nominated students, their parents and other guests.

As well as recognising academic excellence, the awards honoured students who have excelled in particular areas such as performing arts and recognised those young people who have made a significant contribution to school life and given support to fellow students.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Edge said: “Merton students have worked tremendously hard this year and the results they achieved reflect this. It is good to see so many children receiving awards for their hard work.”

Cabinet member for education Councillor Peter Walker, cabinet member for education said: “Our students and schools have worked very hard over the past year to achieve the amazing GCSE and A Level results. I congratulate each and every person who received an award.

‘I am particularly delighted to be at this celebration in the year that Merton’s secondary schools for the first time exceeded the national average for GCSE passes. Merton schools are rightly proud of this achievement.”
